About CANVAS

The Canadian National Vaccine Safety (CANVAS) Network is a national platform that monitors vaccine safety after vaccines are approved for use. These studies complement Canada’s passive vaccine safety surveillance system by providing rapid information in the early stages of each vaccine campaign. The purpose of this study is to find out how often health events occur after a COVID-19 or influenza vaccine.

Who Can Take Part?

We are looking for any participants who are eligible to receive either or both the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines during the Fall 2024 campaign. You can take part in this study if you have received a COVID-19 or influenza vaccine in the past eight days, and if you have an email address, telephone number and a device to answer online surveys. Parents can enroll their minor children as well. To enroll, click here

Where

This study will take place in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Yukon Territory.

How your participation will make a difference

By joining this national study you are contributing valuable data about the frequency of adverse events following immunization. Your responses will also help researchers to determine whether severe adverse events (AE) rates in vaccine recipients are higher than severe AE rates in the unvaccinated control group. Post-market vaccine safety surveillance is an important step in ensuring vaccine safety.

What you’ll need to do

Vaccinated study participants will be asked to complete four short online surveys, each taking less than 5 minutes to complete. We will email you a link to these surveys for fall 2024 on the following schedule:

  1. One week after you or your child get a dose of COVID-19 and/or influenza vaccine
  2. One month after you or your child get a dose of COVID-19 and/or influenza vaccine

In early fall 2025 you will be sent a link to the COVID-19/Influenza Vaccine Safety Control Surveys that collect data about the occurrence of any health problems in the last 7 and 30 days.  This will measure the amount of illness in your family/community (background illness) just before the COVID-19 and/or influenza vaccines become available. We need to measure the background illness because it helps us better measure any increase in illness that may happen after getting the COVID-19 or influenza vaccines.

The surveys will collect basic demographic information about you (age, sex, gender, underlying health conditions). If you report a new health problem which made you or your child visit a doctor or nurse we may call you to find out more about the symptoms of the new health problem. Certain health problems need to be reported to Public Health for follow up – we will call you if we need to do this.

Visit CANVAS online for more information about this and other CANVAS surveillance studies, or to enroll.
