A healthier world starts with you.
Volunteers are vital to advancing vaccinology research. Whether you’re among the first to receive a new vaccine or sharing your insights in focus groups, your participation makes a significant difference.
By joining a CCfV study as a volunteer, you contribute to the advancement of science and medicine and directly impact the health and well-being of local and global communities. Together, we can pave the way for innovative solutions to improve public health.

Ways to Participate

Clinical Trials
For a new vaccine to be approved for use in Canada, it must go through rigorous, multi-phased clinical trials to evaluate safety and effectiveness. Volunteers in these trials receive a test vaccine, approved vaccine, or placebo (saline solution) and complete diary cards and check ins to report any symptoms.

Human Challenge Studies
Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIMs) and Challenge Studies intentionally expose healthy and consenting adult volunteers to a common mild pathogen. Participants in these studies spend one to three weeks in CCfV's Challenge Unit where they are closely monitored and cared for.

Social Science Research
Social Science and Humanities studies can help inform public policy or work toward making vaccination programs more equitable. Volunteering for these studies could include focus groups, surveys, or one-on-one interviews about your lived experiences.

Fully Informed
All studies involve a thorough consent process to ensure you understand everything you are asked to do and all possible risks. A staff member will guide you through the documents detailing the study procedures and risks. You are encouraged to ask questions at any step of the process.

Managing Your Wellbeing
Research staff will ensure you are healthy enough to participate in a study with minimal risks. This is why strict age or health restrictions limit the participation of some studies. Each study has different procedures to monitor symptoms during the study period and to follow up with you after a study.

Reimbursement
Your research contributions are valued. When you participate in a study, CCfV may cover parking or travel expenses incurred due to your participation. Some studies also provide additional monetary reimbursement as an acknowledgement of your time. Amounts are entirely dependent on the individual study.
